Lapland cabin holiday: frequently asked questions
Booking and payment, arrival, what is included, travel, and the best seasons.
Booking & payment
How do I book a cabin with Valkea Homes?
Send a booking inquiry directly through valkeahomes.fi and we'll get back to you within 24 hours. Booking directly with us guarantees the best price — there are no platform commissions or third-party fees added on top.
Why book directly through your website?
Direct booking is always the most affordable route. Our cabins are also listed on Lomarengas and a few other platforms, but those bookings include service-fee commissions added to the final price. When you book direct, you save on the price and get a personal contact for your trip.
How does payment work?
We invoice you after the booking is confirmed. For larger reservations we ask for 30% at booking and the remaining 70% one month before arrival.
Is there a security deposit?
Standard bookings don't require a deposit. For youth groups, bachelor parties, and event-style stays we may ask for a small refundable deposit, returned in full once our cleaner has inspected the cabin after departure.
Is there a minimum stay?
Minimum stay varies by cabin and season. Special requests — long weekends, shorter weekday stays, off-season nights — are worth asking about; we try to accommodate where we can.
Cancellation & changes
What is your cancellation policy?
Bookings cancelled more than 30 days before the arrival date are refunded in full. Cancellations made closer to the arrival date are non-refundable.
What if I have to cancel because of illness or another unexpected reason?
We strongly recommend booking travel insurance, which typically covers unexpected cancellations and other trip risks. The cost is small relative to the protection it gives.
Can I change my booking dates?
Get in touch and we'll see what's possible. Date changes made well in advance are usually straightforward, provided the new dates are open.
Check-in & access
What are check-in and check-out times?
Official check-in is between 18:00 and 00:00, and check-out is by 11:00. In practice we're flexible in both directions whenever the schedule allows — just ask on the day of arrival and we'll usually find an early or late slot that works.
Can I drop off luggage if I arrive early?
Yes. Luggage drop-off is possible from 14:00 onwards. Send us a message in advance so we can arrange it.
How do I get the keys?
Key handover details and cabin-specific instructions are in the digital welcome guide we send right after your booking is confirmed.
What's included?
Are bed linens and towels included?
Bed linens and towels are not included by default, but they can be added for a small fee. Please let us know in advance — late requests can't always be fulfilled.
Is final cleaning included?
Final cleaning is usually optional. Our philosophy is built on trusting our guests, which lets us keep prices accessible. Every cabin is inspected and brought up to a high hygiene standard between bookings, so the property is always clean on arrival. You can also add final cleaning as a paid extra if you'd rather not handle it yourself on departure.
Is firewood included?
Each booking includes a standard amount of firewood. Extra can be ordered if you need more — details are in the cabin welcome guide.
Do all cabins have WiFi?
Yes — all our cabins have fast 5G WiFi.
Do the cabins have a sauna, and how does it work?
Most of our cabins have an electric sauna, which heats up easily and quickly. Detailed instructions are in the cabin welcome guide — generally, allow about 30–45 minutes for the sauna to reach proper temperature.
Are kitchens fully equipped?
All cabins come with fully equipped kitchens — dishware, coffee maker, microwave, stove, and fridge-freezer as standard. Specific cabins may include extras such as a dishwasher or induction hob; check the cabin listing for details.
Pets, smoking & house rules
Can I bring my dog or other pet?
Pets are welcome in most of our cabins. The pet fee varies by cabin, ranging from approximately €25–50 for the whole stay. Guests are responsible for any damage caused by their pet — travel insurance typically covers this kind of claim.
Is smoking allowed?
Smoking is strictly prohibited inside all of our cabins, with no exceptions. Smoking indoors will result in a substantial fine, and we will pursue legal action if necessary. Smoking is allowed outside, provided all cigarette butts are collected and disposed of in the outdoor waste bin — they may not be placed in the indoor trash.
Can I host a party or bachelor weekend?
Parties and bachelor groups are possible on a case-by-case basis. Please mention this when you book; we may ask for a small refundable deposit, returned in full after the cabin is inspected.
What is the maximum number of guests?
Maximum occupancy matches the listed bed count for each cabin. Each property is sized accordingly — please let us know in advance if you're planning to bring extra guests.
Travel & getting there
Where are your cabins located?
We have cabins from southern Finland up to northern Lapland — at Lake Lohja, in Pyhätunturi, Luosto, and the Ylläs / Äkäslompolo area. Each region offers a different kind of holiday with the same standard of accommodation quality.
What are the closest airports?
- - Pyhätunturi & Luosto: Rovaniemi Airport (RVN, ~130 km) or Kuusamo Airport (KAO, ~110 km)
- - Ylläs & Äkäslompolo: Kittilä Airport (KTT, ~35 km)
- - Lohja & Lake Lohja: Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL, ~80 km)
Do I need a car?
A car is recommended for our Lapland cabins — it gives you flexibility for skiing, hiking, restaurants, and excursions. Airport transfers and bus connections reach most destinations, and several of our cabins are within walking distance of resort centres. For Lohja, a car is essentially needed.
Are winter tyres required?
In Finland, winter tyres are legally required between 1 November and 31 March when conditions warrant. On Lapland roads, both winter tyres and winter-driving experience are essential — if you're driving your own car, check tyre condition before the trip.
Do any cabins have EV charging?
Some of our cabins include an EV charging point. Check the cabin listing for details — for example, the Villa Arcus apartments at Pyhä come with a built-in EV charging point.
Best time to visit
When is the best time to see the northern lights in Finland?
The aurora season runs from September through late April. The best conditions need clear skies and full darkness — October through March is statistically the strongest window. Aurora can never be guaranteed, but most 4–7 night holidays will see at least one night of activity when the weather cooperates.
When is ski season in Lapland?
At Pyhä, Luosto, and Ylläs the ski season runs from late November well into May. Peak season is December through April, with the best snow conditions typically falling between February and April.
When is ruska — the Finnish autumn colour?
Ruska is Lapland's most colourful autumn period — usually mid-September to early October. Pyhä and Ylläs are known for spectacular ruska, and the peak window typically lasts about a week, depending on the year.
When is the summer season?
Lapland summer is short but intense — June through late August. The midnight sun lights up the nights from mid-June, and hiking, fishing, and mountain-biking trails are at their best. At Lohja, summer is the prime cottage season: warm lake water, sauna, and long lazy days on the shore.
What is there to do in your destinations?
In Pyhä, Luosto, and Ylläs the focus is downhill skiing, cross-country trails, snowshoeing, husky and reindeer farms, hiking, and fishing. At Lake Lohja the focus shifts to swimming, rowing, fishing, plus golf and hiking trails nearby. The cabin welcome guide always includes our local favourites.
Support & emergencies
How can I reach you during my stay?
Our customer service is available 24/7 by phone at +358 10 299 3033 and email at info@valkeahomes.fi. Daytime responses are fastest, and we kindly ask that non-urgent matters be raised during business hours — but for emergencies and urgent issues we're reachable around the clock.
What if something breaks during my stay?
Let us know right away by phone or email and we'll handle it. Small maintenance items (a bulb out, an appliance hiccup) we can usually resolve quickly. Accidental damage isn't something to stress about — just let us know so we can put things right for the next guest.
